Dental Health Top Tips - Supporting National Smile Month

Spreading the message #nationalsmilemonth

A healthy smile is so important.
Our teeth have such an important role to play in our lives.
They help us chew and digest food, they help us to talk and speak clearly and they also give our face its shape. Because of this it only makes sense to give our oral health the best possible care possible.

Caring for your mouth.
1. Brush your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day with a fluoride toothpaste.

2. Clean in between your teeth at least once a day using interdental brushes or floss.

3. Make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride; it helps strengthen the tooth enamel making it more resistant to decay.

4. Change your toothbrush every two-to-three months, or sooner if it becomes worn.

5. If you use mouthwash don't use it directly after brushing as you rinse away the fluoride from your toothpaste.

Children's oral health.
1. Take your child to the dentist early, as soon as possible. This will help them get use to the sights and sounds and smells of a dental practice.

2. When the first teeth start to appear, try using a toothbrush designed for children, with a smear of fluoride toothpaste.

3. A child's tooth brushing should be supervised until they are about 7 years old.

4. Use a timer or brush along to a song to ensure your children are brushing for the correct amount of time.

5. Use a reward chart to track your children's brushing habits and get them actively involved in brushing their teeth.

Visiting the dentist.
1. Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

2. Visiting a dental hygienist/therapist can help give you excellent tips and advice on preventing dental problems.

3. A dental professional doesn't just look at your teeth and gums, they examine around the whole mouth.

4. Your dentist will carry out a visual mouth cancer check during your regular check-up.
